SEO for Landscapers: A Comprehensive Guide to Boost Your Online Presence

June 29, 202411 min read

“Quality is not an act, it is a habit.” - Aristotle

Introduction:

Hey there! So, you have a landscaping business and you've heard that SEO can help you attract more customers. But where do you start? Don't worry, I've got your back. Let me walk you through a simple 7-step process to boost your online presence with SEO, just like I would explain it to someone who is brand new to all of this...

With that said, here is the comprehensive 7 step process for SEO for Landscapers that any newbie can pick up on! 👊

Step 1: Understanding SEO for Landscapers

First things first, let's get the basics down. SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is all about making your website more visible to people searching for landscaping services online. Think of it as sprucing up your digital front yard ( no pun intended ;) ) to attract more visitors.

A beautifully landscaped garden

Just like you plan, design, and maintain a client's yard, SEO involves planning, designing, and maintaining your website and online presence to make it more attractive to search engines like Google. But before diving into the nitty-gritty, it's essential to understand how SEO can work for your landscaping business. Let me share an example to illustrate this better.

An Example of How SEO for Landscaping Works

Imagine you own a landscaping company and want to rank higher on Google for "landscaping services near me." Your goal is to make sure that when people search for this term, your business appears at the top of the search results. This visibility can lead to more inquiries, more customers, and ultimately, more revenue.

Jeremy Morrisn from Quora shared his experience: "My first year I spent around $6000 on Google ads. I got clients, enough for one route and that was it. Throughout the next year I constantly worked on my SEO. About halfway into the year, I started ranking for money keywords and it just progressed from there to the point where I was ranking in top spots for pretty much all the services I offered."

This example highlights the power of SEO. Instead of continuously spending on ads, Jeremy invested time and effort into optimizing his website, and it paid off in the long run. Now, let's break down the process into actionable steps.

Step 2: Setting Up Your Google My Business Profile

Next up, you need to claim and optimize your Google My Business (GMB) profile. This is your online business card. A user on Reddit, ElderberryAlarming30, shared how crucial this step was for his lawn care business.

Go to Google My Business, sign up, and fill out all the details about your business. Add high-quality photos, and encourage your customers to leave reviews. This step is vital because it helps your business appear in local search results and on Google Maps.

But it doesn't stop there. To fully optimize your GMB profile, make sure to:

  1. Verify Your Business: Google will send you a postcard or an email to verify your business. This step is crucial to ensure your business is legitimate.

  2. Complete All Information Fields: Include your business hours, phone number, website URL, and a detailed description of your services. The more information you provide, the better.

  3. Add Photos and Videos: High-quality images of your work can attract more customers. Show off your best landscaping projects.

  4. Post Regular Updates: Share updates about your services, promotions, and events. Regular posts keep your profile active and engaging.

Setting up and optimizing your GMB profile is a significant first step in improving your local SEO. Now, let's move on to the next critical step: keyword research.

Step 3: Conducting Keyword Research

Keywords are the foundation of SEO. They are the phrases people type into search engines when they're looking for services like yours. For example, "landscaping services near me" or "best landscapers in Austin."

A picture of keyword search results in Google Keyword Planner

If you look at the picture above, you'll see how a landscaper like yourself went to Google Keyword Planner and typed in 'landscaping services near me'. We can see that it has 10,000 all the way up to 100,000 searches per month with low competition. Those two stats alone tell us this is a keyword worth targeting.

It even gives us related keywords to target right above it if we wanted to broaden our search and get even more projected monthly visitors. In this case, we won't need to as 100,000 monthly searches is more than enough!!!

Here's how you can conduct effective keyword research:

  1. Identify Core Services: List all the services you offer, such as lawn care, garden design, and irrigation system installation.

  2. Find Relevant Keywords: Use keyword research tools like Google Keyword Planner (which is free) or Ahrefs to find keywords related to each service. Look for both broad and specific terms. In the picture above, you see the related keywords right under your search query next to 'Broaden your search:'.

Another hack for this would be to Google your search term and scroll to the bottom where it says 'People also searched for'

A picture of People also search for results

  1. Analyze Search Volume and Competition: Choose keywords with a good search volume and low to medium competition. In our example above, we see that 'landscaping services near me' generates an average of 10,000 to 100,000 searches per month with LOW competition. Meaning if you write compelling content and sprinkle that keyword appropriately throughout your content you will get 10,000 searches MINIMUM. Mind you that most, if not all, of that traffic is going to landscapers ranking on page one for that term. But most landscapers aren't doing this hence the low competition so it shouldn't be that hard!

  2. Include Local Modifiers: Add your city or region to the keywords. For example, "lawn care services in Seattle" or "garden design in Austin."

Once you have your list of keywords, the next step is to incorporate them into your website. This process is known as on-page optimization.

Step 4: Optimizing Your Website

With your keywords in hand, it's time to optimize your website. This involves adding those keywords to your site's content, titles, and meta descriptions. Think of it as strategically placing signs in your yard to guide visitors.

On-Page SEO

On-page SEO includes optimizing individual web pages to rank higher and earn more relevant traffic. Here are some key elements to focus on:

  1. Title Tags: Include your primary keyword in the title tag of each page. For example, "Lawn Care Services in Seattle | Bob's Landscaping". A lot of hosting services have a Meta SEO section where you can put this.

  2. Meta Descriptions: Write compelling meta descriptions that include your primary keyword and encourage users to click. Keep it under 160 characters. This is also in the Meta SEO section which you'll usually find inside of your blog editor.

A picture of Meta SEO for a website

  3. Headings (H1, H2, H3): Use headings to structure your content and include keywords naturally. This helps both users and search engines understand your content.

  4. Content: Create high-quality, informative content that addresses your customers' needs. Use keywords naturally throughout the text, but avoid keyword stuffing. If you specialize in a certain service, like sod removal, then it shouldn't be too difficult to write detailed and unique content on it because you have extensive personal experience doing it!

  5. Images: Optimize images by using descriptive file names and alt tags. This helps search engines understand what the images are about.

Technical SEO

Technical SEO ensures that your website is set up correctly and can be easily crawled by search engines. Here are some key aspects:

  1. Mobile-Friendliness: Ensure your website is mobile-friendly. Google uses mobile-first indexing, meaning it primarily uses the mobile version of your site for ranking. Most people that find you will be using a cell phone so this is especially important. Luckily, most hosting sites like Blue Host and Host Gator make this easy with Desktop and Mobile Views of your editor.

A picture of mobile friendly mode for a website

  2. Page Speed: Improve your site’s loading speed. A slow website can hurt your rankings and drive visitors away. A good way to make sure your site loads fast is good design principles when developing it. Whether you are designing your site or a developer, it's important that the code is written properly and it isn't too bogged down with too many third party libraries or assets.

  3. Secure Website (HTTPS): Use HTTPS to secure your website. It’s a ranking factor and builds trust with your visitors. Registering your domain with someone like GoDaddy or Namecheap is an easy way to do this.

  4. XML Sitemap: Create and submit an XML sitemap to Google. This helps search engines understand your site’s structure and index it properly. You will usually find this in the Footer section of your website and it is basically a glossary for you entire website's ecosystem.

Optimizing your website is a continuous process. Regularly update your content and ensure your site remains fast, secure, and user-friendly. Now, let's talk about building backlinks.

Step 5: Building High-Quality Backlinks

Backlinks are the 'street cred' for your website. The more high-quality ones you get, the more search engines start to take you seriously.

A beautiful image of backlinks

Here are some strategies to build high-quality backlinks:

  1. Local Directories: List your business in local directories like Yelp, Angie's List, and the Better Business Bureau. These sites have high authority and can drive local traffic.

  2. Industry Websites: Reach out to industry-specific websites and blogs to get featured. Offer to write guest posts or provide expert quotes.

  3. Partnerships: Partner with local businesses and organizations. For example, you could offer to maintain the grounds for a local community center in exchange for a backlink on their website.

  4. Content Marketing: Create high-quality content that others want to link to. This can include blog posts, guides, infographics, and case studies. The more nuanced and experienced you are with your skillset, like 'How to use sod cutters for sod removal', the more credible you seem when attracting backlinks.

  5. Social Media: Share your content on social media to increase its reach and attract backlinks.

Building backlinks takes time and effort, but it's crucial for improving your site's authority and search engine rankings. Now, let's move on to leveraging social media.

Step 6: Leveraging Social Media

Social media is another powerful tool in your SEO toolbox. Create profiles on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Share updates, photos of your projects, and engage with your audience.

A beautiful landscape of leveraging social media

Here’s how to effectively use social media for your landscaping business:

  1. Create Engaging Content: Share high-quality photos and videos of your landscaping projects. Before-and-after shots are particularly compelling.

  2. Post Regularly: Consistency is key. Aim to post at least a few times a week to keep your audience engaged.

  3. Engage with Followers: Respond to comments and messages promptly. Engaging with your audience builds relationships and trust.

  4. Run Ads: Consider running targeted ads on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. These ads can reach a wider audience and drive traffic to your website.

  5. Join Local Groups: Participate in local community groups on Facebook and LinkedIn. Offer advice, share your expertise, and connect with potential customers.

Eggie82 from Reddit emphasized the importance of being active on social media: "Get a Facebook business page set up and run a few ads. Stay consistent and keep using traditional advertising channels."

Leveraging social media can drive traffic to your website, improve your local SEO, and help you build a loyal customer base. Finally, let's talk about creating compelling content.

Step 7: Creating Compelling Content

Content is king in the SEO world. Creating high-quality, informative content helps you rank higher in search results and establishes you as an authority in your field.

A picture of a blog post about Hydroseeding

Here are some tips for creating compelling content:

  1. Blog Posts: Write blog posts that address common questions and concerns your customers have. For example, you could write a post titled "Hydroseeding 101" that explains the benefits and process of hydroseeding.

  2. Guides and Tutorials: Create detailed guides and tutorials on various landscaping topics. For example, a guide on "How to Design a Low-Maintenance Garden."

  3. Case Studies: Share case studies of successful projects you've completed. Include before-and-after photos, challenges faced, and how you overcame them.

  4. Videos: Create videos showcasing your work, offering tips, and explaining services. Videos are highly engaging and can boost your SEO.

  5. Infographics: Use infographics to present information visually. They are easy to share and can attract backlinks.

When creating content, focus on quality over quantity. Ensure your content is well-researched, informative, and engaging. Use keywords naturally and include internal links to other relevant pages on your website.

Creating a content calendar can help you plan and organize your content. Aim to publish new content regularly to keep your audience engaged and attract new visitors.

Conclusion

And there you have it – a simple, 7-step process to boost your landscaping business with SEO. It ain't brain surgery, but it takes some elbow grease, just like landscaping. Put in the work and watch the magic happen. By getting a grip on SEO, setting up your Google My Business profile, doing keyword research, optimizing your website, building backlinks, working social media, and cranking out great content, you'll turn your online presence into a customer magnet. No respect? With this, you'll have more customers than you know what to do with!
